White Rose Doctoral Training Centre
The White Rose DTC is a collaborative endeavour between the Universities of Sheffield, York and Leeds.
As a Social Science PhD student, you are a part of the DTC, and can benefit greatly from it. Through the DTC, new students are registered on 4 core modules. There are comprehensive induction events, as well as a great number of training and development opportunities, conferences, and networking events. Additionally, self-funded students can apply for financial support to carry out their data collection.
You can find out more by emailing the team
Core DDP Modules
All new Social Science PGR students who registered on or after 1st August 2011 are automatically enrolled on 4 core DDP modules, as part of the new White Rose Social Science Doctoral Training Centre.Students are therefore required to undertake the following modules, unless their agreed TNA Form demonstrates that they are already competent in the areas covered by the modules:
- FCS660 – Foundations of Social Science Research
- FCS670 – Qualitative Methods for Social Science Research
- FCS650 – Quantitative Methods for Social Scientists
- FCS6100 – Research Ethics and Integrity
Only in exceptional circumstances can students be un-enrolled from these courses (with the exception of FCS6100). In such cases, the student and their supervisors should contact the DDP team to discuss this.
DTC Induction Events
All new students are expected to attend the Sheffield DTC Induction Events. These events will provide detailed information on all the core modules that students are expected to complete, as well as information on how the DDP will help you to develop as a researcher, training on the e-portfolio system, and much more.
These Induction Days are for all new PGR Social Science students, and attendance is strongly encouraged.
Other events, such as the annual conference, as well as other training events, are publicised to students via email, as well as on the White Rose's website - http://wrdtc.ac.uk/. Students are strongly encouraged to review these opportunities regularly, and to discuss with their supervisors should they wish to attend any such events.
Faculty Research Support Scheme
The Faculty Research Support Scheme is targeted at those students who are not in receipt of any funding from the following:- Research Councils (e.g. ESRC), Departmental or Faculty Scholarships, overseas government, other overseas institution eg. universities , or similar, and is intended to support the research-related expenses of students not in receipt of a ‘research support training grant’ (or equivalent).
